Maybe I should be playing cash games?

Author : , Posted on: 28.03.2008

Hmm,

Maybe I should be playing cash games?

Hit a bit of a dull period SNG wise where I dropped a bit (not much – maybe $90 or so) after playing 60 or 70 of them so I decided to mix it up a bit and play some cash over the last two days.

Yesterday played 4 x $100 NLHE (6 handed) cash tables for 1 hour and made $198 before I remembered I had to go out to dinner.  Still this wasn\’t a bad result and seemed much easier than grinding away with the $10 sngs.

Today was even better.  I planned to play cash for a couple of hours but I had a hard day (hard week really) at work so I ended up falling asleep on the lounge watching TV and woke up at 2:00am.  I hopped on and played on 4 $100 cash tables again for an hour and a half and made $545 which was handy – definitely happy with that.  My efforts were definitely aided by the player on one table that was willing to call my reraise (I had K-K) with 8-2 and then promptly called a big bet on the flop (10-9-4) at which point he must\’ve felt pot committed because he called the rest of his stack on the turn.  8 on the river obviously didn\’t help him.

I\’ll have to think long and hard about whether to go back to the sngs or continue with the cash.  My BR really isn\’t sufficient to be playing at the $100 cash level but this is what I was playing over the previous two years when I was quite successful (and had the BR for it).  Is 2.1K enough now to be doing this?  I guess I\’ll find out.

Good luck to everyone on the virtual felt and don\’t forget to say hi if you find yourself sitting at one of my tables on FullTilt (X_Milkman_X).

Short but profitable and some notes on BR management

Author : , Posted on: 24.03.2008

Short day but profitable.

Ended up only playing 8 x $10 sngs today (for 6 ITM\’s) and also finished 6th in a $5.50 45 seater.  Bankroll now stands at $1,405.72 – yipee.

Decided was tired early and since tomorrow is a work day the 2 hours of poker is enough for today.

In case it\’s not obvious I play NLHE – lol.

Spent most of the day with my family doing fun stuff (walking to the shops, going to the park, swimming in our pool etc).

BR wise I\’ve decided to be conservative.  I will step up in levels when I have 100 buyins ($2,200 for $20\’s, $3,300 for $30\’s, $5,500 for $50\’s etc).  I\’ll also set a floor of 20 buyins – if I lose that much I drop back down.  So for example I get the BR to $2,200 and promptly start playing the $20\’s – I then lose $440 by losing 20 of these str8 (BR at $1760) so I drop back to the $10\’s.

I know this is conservative but I need it (the reason my bankroll is not much higher after playing 3K of these is that I\’ve gone off and played $2/$4 NLHE cash games and blown 3 to 4 buy-ins in one go.  Firstly I\’m not a $2/$4 NLHE player (it\’s above my game at the moment) and secondly it\’s just plain stupid.  I occasionaly play 25c/50c NLHE and feel comfortable there but I feel I make more money playing the SNGS.  We\’ll see what happens.

I found this on another blogger\’s site but I can\’t remember who now (sorry) – check it out though coz it\’s hilarious:

In case anyone is wondering – my nickname on FullTilt is X_Milkman_X – feel free to say hello if you\’re on my table.

Till next time – good luck on the virtual felt.

1st Session Successful after Blog started

+$103 last night.  Not bad – although it looked grim at the start.

Started with my usual 5 windows open (5 x $10 sng\’s) and bombed out in all of them.  Decided to drop down to 4 tiled windows at a time and this seemed to make an immediate impression.

That first set was an absolute nightmare.  !st one was card dead and went out when short stacked 6 handed (@800 chips) and woke up with A-Q only to run into chip leader\’s A-K.  The next 3 I went out with K-K in all of them.  Twice to 8-7 offsuit (one hit the str8 on the flop with 4-5-6) and the other hit the gutshot with a 6 on the turn.  The third K-K atrocity happened because of two donks (at least I think they are).  Player no1 raises from mid position to 180 (blinds were 30/60) – I find K-K in the SB and re-raise to 500 – at this stage the BB thinks about it and then goes all in (he had K-Q?).  Player no1 then goes all-in (he had A-J offsuit) – I call and the flop promptly brings an Ace – aargh.

I shake this start off and end up playing a total of 24 sngs for 12 ITM\’s and a profit of $86.  I also threw a $10 +$1 45 seater into the mix where I finished 5th for a payout of $27 which completed my play for the day and my tidy $103 profit.  Not spectacular but steady none the less.

Today is Monday but it\’s not a work day due to Easter long weekend so I\’m looking forward to squeezing in some more play today.

Good luck and see you all on the felt.

:-)

New to this Blogging Stuff

Apologies in advance if this looks a little amateurish etc.  I\’ve been playing poker for approximately 3 years but had a 12 month hiatus in there till I got bitten by the bug again in July 2007.  I used to be a cash player until I started again in July 2007 and discovered I was quite good at the SNG thing.  I deposited $50 AUD (I\’m an Aussie) which equated to $42 USD in Pokerstars back then and over this period turned that into my current BR.  Not great – but not bad either.  After about 6 months I decided to flick over to FullTilt (December 2007) and found the games softer there so I now play there pretty much exclusively.

I\’ve decided to do the blog thing because my BR management is a bit woeful.  I do concentrate on SNGS (playing 5 x $10 at a time) but I occasionally get tempted by cash and invariably chase losses there.  Currently make @15% ROI with the SNGS on FullTilt so hopefully the BLOG will help keep me on track.

One other note – I do dabble in MTT\’s on the odd occasion when the planets align – although it is difficult as I have a family and two children under 6 (girl 3 and boy 6) – this coupled with the fact I\’m in Oz does make it difficult to play alot of them.  (I did win a $5 +50c tourney back in Oct 2007 on PokerStars which paid $1,098) – This should tell everyone that my BR managment has not been the best.

Planning to hit the tables for my customary set of 15-20 $10 sngs (over 3-4 hours) tonight.  Will keep everone posted on what transpires.
